In Nicholas Carr's essay, "Is google Making Us Stupid", he strongly voices that Google and other new devices that have come out recently and over time have changed the way we think about things and the way we do things. Carr uses many examples that show throughout history new devices such as Google, and others make us change how and why we do things. Google for instance has adapted the way humans read; we now skim and fast read instead of the old way of reading throughly.
I agree with Carr's reasoning. As the internet grows more and more and more popular, the way we do things will change. Skim reading is something that now is used more than it was before. Before I feel it was frowned upon, now it is just a normal everyday thing.
My own experiences prove that Carr is correct with what he is saying. I skim read almost always; I usually never fully read something because I am not interested in what I am reading. If I do find something that I like to read or find interesting then i will take my Mostly, I have found that I do not fully examine the text if I am reading online. But books, now that is a different story. The computer is much harder for me to stay focused on because of the many distractions that come with the internet.
When reading on the internet, it is very hard to stay focused, Nicholas Carr also uses that in his writing. I feel the main reason for that is facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and so many other sites are more appealing to go to than be reading work for class and actually doing the homework assigned that is to be done on the internet. Many people also think this way because when a distraction is there it is hard to just ignore it. A personal experience I have with this is while on Facebook, many of my friends will posting status' about not doing their homework because they would rather be on Facebook or that they are too distracted to actually be doing homework or even, that they lost track of time while on the internet and now have to rush to finish their homework.
The internet is ever changing, the way we think; the things we do, and even how we spend our time. Many people spend more time on the internet now then they do watching tv. This is weird to think of because a while ago the tv was the biggest source of media. Now it is the internet. I wonder, in 50 years, maybe the internet wont be the biggest media source. It could something not even invented yet today. You never know, maybe me or one of you reading this could even invent that very thing.
