Ed Reform

According to what Gatto and Robinson is saying education would need to be altered in a couple different ways. We would have to get rid of grades or the current grading system. This is important because most kids are worried about grades as well as their parents. Right now the main point of school is to get a good grade rather then to learn the information (I don’t think learning the information directly relates to good grades.) With grades gone Children wouldn’t be afraid to make mistakes so they would be able to become more creative and original (this is going into what Sir Ken Robinson is talking about). Children should choose their education and what they want to learn, this would mean we would need much more classes then current basic ones. This would make is so kids could do what they want to do and learn what interests them. Students would find fields that they’re interested in and be able to pursue those interests. I believe this would make the students motivate themselves to learn rather then to earn a grade. The students and the future would benefit the most since they would be able to pursue and do what they want to do.
Some possible problems would be that you would need much more teachers if you had more classes. I feel like this would stifle the working class, less people would end up in factory jobs or similar jobs. On the other hand someone will probably design robots to do those jobs anyway sooo oh well. People would be only talented in one field rather then many so maybe over all the population would be diverse however each single person wouldn’t have a wide range of skills and traits which could pose problems.

  2. The fact that Eng 100 is pass/fail rather than graded at Whatcom is one of the reasons that I like teaching it. I think for many students, when you remove grades, they can focus on improving their work without thinking about the grade. It (along with the multiple drafts) also helps students feel like it is okay to take risks. At least, this is what I hope happens. As a student, how does taking a pass/fail class affect you?
