Response to Ken robinson video

I think that the best way to reform our educational system to accomodate the ideas of Gotto and Robinson would be to have a much more relaxed criteria for what you need to graduate from school. If people were more interested in the arts, they could take those classes more so that they could realize their full potential in that area. Society would benefit greatly from this because people would be able to follow their intrests instead of being told to just get through school and get a job. It would also lead to many different views and opinions of the world because of the differences in education which would lead to a much more diverse group of people than the fixed education of today allows. Unfortunately as Gotto says in his essay, the government/ corporations don't want you to do anything in school except become categorized and be trained to all think alike. Introducing an educational system that helps people realize their actual potential would not be something that our government would allow.

  1. When you say have a more relaxed criteria do you mean have fewer requirements? or just let the students take more classes that they want instead of telling them they need 2 credits of this and 4 credits of that? In ways, I agree that this would be nice, but if we change this, would we change the things colleges and universities look for on high school transcripts too? This then could become complicated. What is your take on this?

  2. I've always liked the idea of an "open curriculum", but I wonder though how well that would work with today's students who often seem uninterested in any subject, whether it's a problem of students studying the wrong subject, or if kids these days are just bored with mental life.
