Reading Responce #4

Each and every individual is born with their own unique creativity. Sadly, instead of expanding our imagination, schools are exterminating our ability to create new opinions. Schools today consist of boring lectures that only make us want to fall asleep. Teachers notice us constantly fidgeting with anything around us, texting or simply playing no attention to what is being taught. Why should a learning environment be so dull? We should defiantly be able to learn what we are interested and talented at. Sadly, I think this is the reason why a lot of kids drop out of school. They are not learning about what they are interested in, but they are learning what the government tries to make us learn.
I personally stay focus on one simple lecture for more than about 10-15 minutes, so learning about a subject that doesn’t catch my interest only drops those 15 minutes to about 1 minute. Why should we have to learn about things that don’t appeal to us? According to Sir Ken Robinson, “schools are educating kids out of their creativity”. Robinson also claims “everyone has the same subjects around the world.” So this means all schools around the world are taking the one thing we are born with and degrading us to be mind-numb.
Creativity is a talent. We are all born with something were exceptionally talented at. How the heck are we suppose to learn what we’re good at if the only basics we are taught over and over are math, English and science. In Robinson’s view, we are sometimes told not to do something (such as music or art) because we will never have a job in it. You would think that we have to take the required core requirements because we all have to major in English, math or science. That doesn’t seem right. Sir Robinson’s friend Julianne was a great example of his claim. She showed her teacher and mother that school was just not the place for her. She belonged at a dance school After years of accomplishing what she did best, she eventually found her own company (Julian Dance Company), became responsible for some of the most successful theater plays in history. All this because the girl had to “move to think.” I believe most talented imaginations work this way but are not able to show it because we are slaves of the schools requirements and orders.
How will we ever be able to find our talent is schools are forcing us to learn what they think is important. Its as if our opinion doesn’t matter in this country of “freedom.” When I was a child I use to love learning about science, and math and English. Of course those were the only subjects we are taught, music class was our only elective. Now as a senior in high school I detest those three subjects. It might have to do with the fact that the same thing gets old. No one would like to spend 12 years or even 13 learning about something that does not interest them. Schools really should think more about our opinions and ideas. Young kids have a developing brain absorbing everything but we have just as much to give back and we are not given to chance to fulfill our capabilities because we are forced to forget them.
